Volume estimation

More often than not, volume determines the method of shipping. Establishing an Idea of volume of your goods early in the process is key. It affects everything from the price to the time frame of shipping. Volume is usually denoted in Cubic Meters or Cubic Feet (CBM or CBFT respectively). To officially determine the volume, a pre-move survey would be advisable.

Pre-Move Survey

The international moving company’s representative would usually visit your residence and conduct a pre-move survey. Depending on volume of contents, it can take up to 1 hour for a 3-4 bedroom house. In addition the moving consultant would run through key points about important shipping/packing details. If you have any particularly awkward items you wish to ship, it is in both parties for this to be addressed. Specialised packing could be required which could add to the cost of moving. For example, fragile chandeliers need to be crated in a special wooden box with hanging support frame. As all wood is imported to the UAE carries a cost factor.

Moving Day

Once you have selected on a mover, Pre-planning is key. There will be items you do not want to be packed, such as suitcases, passports, phone chargers, wallet, backpack etc. These items can be placed in a dedicated room such as the master bedroom or an adjoining bathroom, which is clearly designated as a no go area to the packers and crew leader. If your packing is over multiple days, make sure to pack the bed last or check into a hotel.

Communication with your moving company is essential, select packing dates well in advance, establish whether you will remain in the home during packing, Don’t schedule in anything else, or even work on the moving day(s). Tip: Don’t disconnect utilities before the packing is completed. During summer months it can get blisteringly hot for packers and crew, not to mention if packing continues into the evening. Packing in low light conditions may increase the likelihood for handling errors.

Tip: Don’t leave moving to the last day of your tenancy contract. Landlords can inspect the property on the final day when you return the key. Usually painting will be required or the landlord can take painting fees out of the security deposit. Juggling landlords/building security/painters/movers can be lot to take in on the final day, best to not mix it all at once and set aside adequate time for other formalities.

Shipping – What to consider
Once all your goods depart, you will get an estimated transit time for delivery from the international moving company in Dubai. This could take weeks in a container or longer in a shared container option depending on where you are going. Communication with your moving company is essential, there are many variables which can affect shipping times, for example if you have a transshipment point and the port is full, delays can be expected. How long does it take to get a quote?
Depends on the requirement, if you had a relatively straight forward move and knew in advanced what you are taking. A quote could be emailed to you almost immediately after the mover has called you. On the other hand, if your move it a little complex, an appointment is required and after the pre-move survey is completed, quotes usually take 24-48 hours due to the need to get refreshed updated rates from the shipping line and moving agent at destination, time difference is a factor.

I need to move in a hurry, what can I do?

What can I do to prepare for my move?

Can I get boxes dropped off to my residence beforehand?

Are the quotes door to door?
All quotes provided are door to door unless specified otherwise. There are certain mitigating circumstances for example, the delivery area at destination is tricky and additional services is required such as long carry, delivery above 1st floor without elevators, heavy items which require extra equipment etc. This is all specified in the moving companies’ quotation. Take the time to go through it so you are prepared.

Are there additional costs I need to know about?
Straight forward moves, with easy customs clearance generally there should be no additional costs. However most additional costs can be avoided if everything is done right, most frequent source of additional costs usually comes from customs. The security in my building is tricky, what can I do?
Talk to the property developer, in most cases there is a “moving out” form which needs to be submitted. Packing crew are also sometimes asked to submit their ID to the security office before they are allowed entry to the property.

Can I take my car?
It is advisable to check on the regulations beforehand, in most cases yes however there can be associated costs with doing so, generally weighing up cost of shipping vs selling is wise. If money is of no object then yes, to most countries you can pay import duties and take the vehicle. As a general rule, it is not recommended to import cars outside of the UK/ EU. USA/Canada is only recommended for US made and exported vehicles. However with every country there are regulations to make sure your car is compliant with the destination country. It is advisable to check all of this beforehand.

Is there any taxes/import duties I need to pay?
Generally for used household goods and personal effects there are regulations which allows you to import your goods import duty free. There are rules and guidelines for every country, we have an extensive list of county guides which could help you understand more about the regulations of the country you are going to. Also it is recommended you always check with your moving company.

I have special items which need to be looked after, what can I do?
Always specify your requirements to the mover, whether it is moving consultant at the pre-move survey or the crew leader on the day. Make sure to point it out so they don’t miss it.

I don’t know where I’m going, can I store my goods?
You can store your goods in the UAE or at destination, most moving companies provide storage solutions. Different options such as air conditioned storage, covered storage, crated storage, documentation storage, car storage. Storage is usually calculated based on per cubic meter per month. Rates differ depending on the requirement you have.

What payment options are there?
Most moving companies accept cash, cheque and credit card. Credit card payments are subject to a percentage fee, usually between 2.5% – 3.5% depending on the credit card service provider.

Why is there a credit card fee?
Credit card providers take a cut for every transaction for using their service. Supermarket chains usually include this into their final product price. However with shipping, you are dealing with thousands instead of hundreds, movers don’t include credit card fees in their quotation as it will make the quote seem noncompetitive.

How do I calculate my volume?
Generally in the UAE, movers use cubic meters as the standard of measurement. You can do this by taking a tape measure and measuring out width x depth x height in meters. E.g. 1.2M x 0.5M x 0.8M = 0.48 Cubic Meters. There is more info in the following article.

I have chosen a mover, what happens now?
Talk to your mover and schedule in an appointment date. You should fill out the acceptance form, stating you have accepted the quote. Make sure if mention full delivery address and emergency contact details of a friend/relative. Passport copies and UAE visa copies are required for exporting from Dubai.

I don’t have a UAE visa any more, can I ship my goods?
Regulations change from time to time, best to check with your mover. Generally speaking once a UAE visa is canceled, you can still export your goods out of the UAE even after an extended period of time in storage.

I don’t qualify for duty free entry, what happens now?
You will most likely be importing the goods as a commercial shipment, which requires a list of items with its associated value to be specified. A commercial invoice will most likely be required which your mover can help organize. Import duties are paid based on value of items and a percentage is paid based on the duty rate tariff, which is unique to every country.

Can I ship my pet?
Moving companies tend to not to deal with pets and it is recommended you talk to pet removals specialist.

Do I really need insurance?
Insurance is definitely recommended, most insurance coverage covers for breakages and damages of the insured value of the item. Under valuing your items is not recommended as if the item does break, you will only be covered for amount you have insured it for. However if the items are low risk of breakage, we would still recommend taking a total loss insurance package which is at a lower rate, however covers you in case of an entire loss of shipment.

I am moving next year, is my quote still valid? Will Prices Change?
It is best to check with your mover on this, shipping rates can change month to month. Validity is usually specified on the quotation.

Storage required?
